One of my Strawberry plant got Kutu Daun (aphid) and some ants are taking advantage of this tending to farm the aphid honey pots. If not treated it will weaken this plant and worst could cause virus or fungal infection. I had to get rid of it quick.Isolate the plant from the rest and at first I try to get rid of the ants by using this ants bait that could eliminate the ants. But it don't seems to work, because they are busy harvesting those honey pots and show no interest to my bait.
For a quick action, decide to clip off two of the most affected leaves and discard them to kill majority of the aphids. The remaining leaves are not that bad, but I must do something to stop recurring.Leaves cut and sprayed with organic pest repellent, if needed I can make do with soap solution. Since I had this spray at hand, just try it out first before proceeding to the next step.I had to isolate this plant, to ensure those aphid don't fly off or hop off to nearest safe place and will just makes things worst. Luckily the plants are all in individual pots, which makes it easy to do this.

Sown last August, after a more than a month it started to germinate, kaffir lime seedling out if 15 seeds sown only these three germinate after one long month.Small tiny seedling that was over cast by Thai Basil plant, after the plant being trimmed only then these seedling were spotted. All I need is one plant to make it, we use the leaves for flavoring. There are sign of another few more breaking ground, will wait another week or two before removing the sowing pots.
These I will try using container, direct soil and Aquaponics and see how it goes.

No matter how you feed them, they are always hungry. Tilapia has short digestive track they eat a little bit at a time but most of the time. These are in my CRAFTS set, and they are getting bigger. I use fish pellets to feed them.Never over feed fish, especially in Aquaponics. Water will get murky and Ammonia will shoot up. If you see foam or bubbles in the fish tank just stop feeding them for at least one day and continue after water had cleared. It's okay for them to go hungry, they will start to feed on the algae making water and tank cleaner.Surplus greens is good, above is the Sambung Nyawa plants that I cut and throw it to give them something to bite.Tilapia will eat greens, one of the best is Kangkung these they will nibble in no time at all. However before feeding them greens make sure they are really hungry. There are loads of green from my Aquaponics growbeds and it's fish food. After 1 day in the fish tanks, this is what left of the plants. Those stems can still be use as cuttings.

Not doing much these last few months on the back lane set, finally after festive season temporarily over I am tiding it up for more planting. The Garlic Chives that I redo from front to make way for the Strawberry doing great and I got twelve pots in this growbed with few more in another growbed. This is more that I need, two pots is all that is required and I may reduce to only six pots for my own use. Three Basil pots I redo into two using the slotted orchid pot, one I transfer another start new from cutting.More Basil than I can handle, Tilapia will eat this.Turmeric are very slow to shot, I'll change to slotted pots once they have sufficient root growth holding the LECA.Above potted flood & drain will be redo to have more plants in it.I must get more plants going to use up all the nitrate, tilapia are getting bigger and they produce more waste now as compare few months back.Few seedlings growing and I must sow more, heavy rain causes damage to seedling and some seeds just don't germinate. Need to change the way I sow those seeds.Three pots of Sambung Nyawa plants taken out from the growbed and giving it away.

Durian Belanda, Soursop or Custard Apple as it is called is an evergreen tree from the rain forest. Three of its sapling were given to me and been standing to keep alive in my aquaponics growbed for few months.Shifted from front to back and before it had its days I better plant it to soil, at least one of it.This I do normal dirt planting there are two left, one I will use container with soil and another I will try Aquaponics.

That aphid infested plant has to be sacrifice to ensure situation contained. I decide to re-pot and trimmed all leaves from this plant. The black aphid reappear, but the ants are no more around.I had to cut all the leaves and get rid all this aphid, need to visit the local flower nursery to find more potent organic spray to ensure they don't reoccur. They are even in the crown area.Trimmed and re-pot and will monitor closely.Hope this plant survived the ordeal.

One of the runner is not long enough to be potted separately, the stolon is too short. There are few youtube videos showing propagating strawberry by cutting these runners and pot them separately. In temperate region it's may be cooler than what we have here, so just give it a shot and see whether it will survive the planting. It has a tiny bit of root, and I am banking on this to get it through.Using smaller 3" pot and LECA since I am doing it Aquaponics way.Pot is low down to ensure the roots touch water, once it survive and has grown more root I will lift the pot higher and eventually use the bigger slotted pot for final grow.

This is no way Aquaponics, but just to record that I had planted a Rambutan Tree in place of the Council planted tree that got blown down during a thunderstorm recently.Bought it from nearby nursery costing me RM 60.00, that about US 20.00 and hope it is a good variety of Rambutan.

Did gutter growbed in March 2010, that time I was using loop siphon and it is difficult to get right. This time I'm doing it with Bell Siphon and for planting Strawberry plants.Main reason why I am trying this again is to reduce the amount of LECA needed since I'll use pot for the plants and it will be easier to do Strawberry in rows on a step.
I need to make a shorter bell siphon since gutter is not that deep, water height the most would be three inches. Therefor the siphon will need to be cut and tailor made to three inch or less. I will try using 20 mm strainerbell siphon modified to suit. A 15 mm StrainerBell would be a good size but I had not tried this size for long.

Lateral crown are plant growth at base of Strawberry plants, some strawberry plants will grow these naturally and other variety will produce these if runners are pruned. From my trial, these lateral crown emerge about two to three months after I planted runners to pots.Like runners, these lateral crown are genetically same as the parent plant and this is one way of propagating strawberry plant quickly. However unlike runners, where once independent they can be easily separated from parent plant by cutting the stolon. In the case of lateral crown, the entire strawberry plant cluster and the crowns are separated from parent rhizomes by carefully cutting it off. This process takes practice and could kill the mother plant if not done correctly.
It is good to have more than one crown in a pot, this will maximized the growing area and a normal practice for strawberry grower to do.
Below more photos of lateral crown at various stages of growth.

Kaffir Lime seedling sown last August has shown more progress. I placed them in individual pots so that they can grow till about 12 inches or so before redoing to another pot. It will be six months before they out grow this pots.So here they are, the Kaffir Five..
Placing them high up on one of the old damaged growbed, away from pounding rain and extreme heat.

Need few more fish to get system balance since I have more Strawberry plants in the growbed in the front. Since the tank already has some Jelawat or Hoven's Carp in it, I need to get some hardy fish that can tolerate it.For the Jelawat tank I bought these Patin or Red Tail Catfish, they are very hardy and able to survive if placed with the Jelawat aggressive behavior.Another tank I need to stock up already has Lampam, so got few more of these Lampam or Tin Foil Barb. This fish can't survive if I put it with the Jelawat.

Today I had to cut off all the flower buds and premature fruit from this plant that I allowed to fruit. It is not healthy and it's best to just remove letting plant grow.Could it be to the heavy down pour that we're experiencing lately causing damage to fruit or is it lacking nutrient. I need to try and find out and make it better.
Slowly I'm learning.
So much for that, the good news is.. finally two of my Strawberry growbed has been completed.. there are eleven plants in each of the growbed. Now I can let it grow till next year season. There is another two smaller growbed and I need another two plants to make that complete.

Make a quick trip to Romatech Agro earlier today to get some Agriculture care product, what I am looking for most is Chelated Iron (Fe) to supplement my aquaponics. Unfortunately they don't stock Fe, but since I am there might as well get some other stuff that is useful for my Aquaponics.Romatech Agro is a small cozy start up, that deal mostly on fertigation items ranging from pumps, tubes to supplement that needed to start a fertigation setup. They also carry few starter kit from Cili Bangi that specialize in fertigation cili plants.I pick up few items, Calcium Boron, Seaweed Extract and Neem oil to supplement my Aquaponics plants. Calcium for plant tissue and fruit deformities, Seaweed Extract for nutrient and Neem Oil to get rid of pest.
